Day 51 – Iowa (by Jim)

August 17, 2010

The Events of Sunday, August 15, 2010

After six weeks on the road, we enjoyed taking a day of rest today. While at home we always enjoyed our Sunday rest day, we have not consistently taken rest days on this trip. Traveling can be restful; and it can be tiring. So it was a special pleasure to stay put today.

We did drive today, about a mile, to church. We joined the Harvest Evangelical Free Church, here in Story City. They did something I’ve never experienced before: a spotlight on one country for briefing and prayer. Costa Rica was their mission focus for the service. An articulate gentleman gave us some pertinent facts and then he led us in prayer for the missionaries and spiritual challenges of the nation.

The rest of the day we enjoyed our campsite in Whispering Oaks Campground. We had a time of Bible Study in the gospel of Mark. The weather was pleasant today, with a low of 60° and a high of 80°. After a couple loads of laundry, we spent some time relaxing. Ben used his new flint and steel to try to start a fire. Pam caught up on her email correspondence. The rest of us pulled out our books to read. I’m borrowing from Caitlin an intriguing book called Art of Travel by Alain de Botton. He explores the idea of curiosity: how it gives life (and travel) a sense of purpose. I’m intrigued to consider how I can best cultivate curiosity for my family (and myself), preparing us all for future destinations on this journey.

Abby demonstrated the perfect approach to traveling with curiosity. She asked, “What is Iowa known for?” Apart from corn and cattle, we know little about this place. So we eagerly look forward to tomorrow: a day at the Iowa State Fair.

The Events of Saturday, August 14, 2010

The fiftieth day of our trip! Yay! It feels so much longer than that…But what a milemarker! I’m somewhat relieved, but then again it’s all speeding by so quickly. There are so many places where I’m like, “When I’m older, I’m going to revisit this with my kids…no, wait, I thoroughly despise traveling and I don’t want to be on this trip.” However, I’m surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed myself on the trip I was determined to despi...

Day 49 – Minnesota (by Abby)

The Events of Friday, August 13, 2010

I think we’re permanently going to get up early, because, like almost every day recently, we woke up and hit the road early. We had breakfast in the parking lot of Grand Portage National Monument. We were quite uninformed about what was happening that weekend, but it turned out that we had come just in time for Rendezvous Weekend. During this one weekend of the year, people come from all over Minnesota to participate in a historical re-enactm...

Day 48 – Minnesota (by Lindsey)

The Events of Thursday, August 12, 2010

This early morning, we were awoken hurriedly. We rushed through breakfast and we were still dressing and packing up for the day when we started driving. We packed backpacks with lunches, water, sweatshirts, and rain jackets into our backpacks, for the traveling Taylors were off for an adventure to Isle Royale National Park. The only way to get to the park is by boat, so we drove to the dock where our boat was waiting for us. We boarded the bo...

August 14, 2010

Events of Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Today was part two and three of Voyageurs National Park in northern MinnesOOOta. After being kept up half the night by a very hard rainstorm which only seemed to intensify the oppressive humidity inside the RV, we awoke early, breakfasted, broke camp and were on our way. We had reservations at 10am at the Ash River Visitor Center on the far east side of Voyageurs National Park. We had reserved spots on a Voyageurs North Canoe trip. When we arriv...

Day 46 – Minnesota (by Caitlin)

August 14, 2010

The Events of Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Today we drove north after saying goodbye to the Bjorlos (well, half of the Bjorlos, anyway). Tired from an early awakening, most of us slept while one lucky parent drove. When we arrived at Rainy Lake Visitor Center in Voyageurs National Park, we had a quick lunch and then went for a fun but short ranger-led canoe ride in Rainy Lake. Ranger Jon led us through a bit of the history of the area and also some of the vegetation. Daddy saw a wolf s...
