Day 123 – Massachusetts (by Caitlin)
The
Events of Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Today is not only day 123 of our
journey (and if you can count, you know why that is so special), but also our
fourth month anniversary! We have now been traveling together as a family in
this RV across this gorgeous country for four months, and this day we embark on
our fifth month of travels. We’re almost to the half-way point of the USA
portion of our adventure. And is it ever the adventure! We began the day with a breakfast of
cereal and then took turns in the campground showers. After our showers, Abby
hit her head on the bathroom door, so she applied frozen peas to her head. Not
being able to work, she took Mommy’s ACE wrap and got some help fashioning it
into a useful head bandage. The ACE wrap held the peas to her head for her so
that she was able to continue working. But oh how she looked ridiculous! We
secured everything, and drove to the dump station, where I had the joy of
helping Daddy dump our refuse. Then we drove a scenic route to the
Cape Cod National Shoreline Visitor Center, where we got our Junior Ranger
booklets and read the exhibits and watched both of the videos about the park: Cape Cod: the Sands of Time and Wooden Ships and Men of Iron. After that
we drove to a scenic picnic spot at Pilgrim’s Landing, and had lunch there,
with a special snack of Cape Cod Sea Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips. Pilgrim’s
landing was where the Pilgrims first landed upon coming to America. After
sending out three forays to assess the land, they decided it was too sandy and
inhospitable to suit their needs. They got back on the Mayflower and headed to
Plymouth. Subsequently, we got back into the RV
and drove to the Cape Cod Hospital, where Ben was treated with the utmost care
for his health problems. Upon hearing his symptoms of back pain where the
kidneys are located, the doctor suspected Ben either had kidney stones, a
kidney infection or a urinary tract infection. All these are unusual diagnoses
for a healthy boy of fourteen. Regardless, IV antibiotics and a CT scan were
warranted. After spending four hours in the ER, we learned that he had a bladder
and urinary tract infection. Thankfully nothing was wrong with his kidneys. They gave him a prescription for some antibiotics
and we drove to CVS/Pharmacy to fill it. Then we parked in the parking lot
across the street. There we cooked and dined on a delicious dinner of elbow
noodles drenched in margarine and parmesan cheese with mixed vegetables, French
bread and butter, and apple crisp and vanilla ice cream for dessert. After dinner, we drove to a Stop and
Shop in East Wareham and readied ourselves for a restful night of sleep.
